U14s and Yulie Lopez (’94) vs. FC Sarasota
Yulie Lopez (’94) had another big game for Schulz Academy as she hammered home 5 goals and notched 1 assist in the Schulz Academy U14 Girls’ game away to FC Sarasota on Sunday, June 15. With Coach Shakes trying to rest players due to some girls returning from ODP trials, Yulie was limited to just half the game. However, half a game with Yulie on the field must have felt like an eternity to the opposition as she got better and better and just kept scoring goal after goal. Yulie got the U14 girls rolling when she made a diagonal run from left to right, collected the ball, beat her marker with pace, and delivered a cross in behind the defense for midfielder
Nicole Poirier (’93) to drive low and into the back of the net. Yulie then scored her first when defender
Sarah Piechocki (’93) lofted a 30 yard ball that found Yulie, who’s good first touch set up a well placed shot. Attacking midfielder
Paulina Speckmaier (’94) pressured the defense and stole the ball, then she looked up and drove a well placed curler into the side netting for goal number three, unassisted.
Kristina Shakes (’94) got in on the act when she collected a through ball from
Arielle Gonzales (’93) and finished calmly, Kristina scored in her 5th straight appearance for Schulz.
The second half saw Yulie return to the field after being substituted in the first half. Yulie then went on a 15 minute tear that saw her score 4 straight goals before being substituted again. Playing out on the left flank, Yulie made several well timed runs that completely unbalanced the FC Sarasota defense. She collected assists from Arielle Gonzales (2 more to her credit), Paulina Speckmaier, and a sublime no-look through ball from Kristina Shakes. In just her third appearance for Schulz, Yulie Lopez has scored 10 goals and assisted on 3.
Late in the game
Renee Hart (’95) finished off a cross from
Donish Cole (’95) to round out the scoring. Goalkeepers
Megan Sweeney (’93) and
Brittany Polly (’93) combined for the shutout which was the teams third this season.
Julia Frederick (’94) and
Merridith Delinois (’93) were once again rock solid in defense as they helped the U14s keep a clean sheet. Final score: Schulz Academy 9, FC Sarasota 0.
U13 Girls vs. Kendall Soccer Coalition
Donish Cole (’95) scored a hat-trick and dished out an assist as Schulz Academy U13 Girls beat Kendall Soccer Coalition 6-0. The win pushed the U13 Girls into first place in the Southeast Division. Donish opened the scoring with a mazy 20 yard penetrating dribble followed by a low right foot shot that beat a diving keeper. She then beat two defenders on the right flank to deliver a cross to
Jacquelyn Kinni (’94) who volleyed home for goal number two. Donish’s second goal was set up by her younger sister
Dominique Cole (’97). The youngest player on the squad, Dominique already has 2 goals and 2 assist on the season. Minutes later Donish scored again, this time set up by defender
Samantha “Nails” Mendez (’95).
Jacquelyn Kinni (’94) then scored her 8th goal of the season off a direct kick to continue her impressive form. Speedy defender
Renee Hart (’95) scored an unassisted goal off a long solo run with the ball from within her own half. The shutout was number 4 for goalkeeper
Cheyenne Walker (’94) and her stingy defensive line made up of
Hannah Coy (’96),
Brianna Raaf (’95),
Renee Hart (’95) and
Samantha “Nails” Mendez (’95).
Notably, holding midfielder
Laurie Scott (’95) has played in all six games for Schulz U13s so far and has been solid throughout. Her effort in midfield is well noted as she serves to disrupt much of the oppositions’ intended play and to build for Schulz.
U14 Girls vs. West Pines United
Both Schulz Academy and West Pines United had to contend with key players being away at ODP trials. Fortunately for Schulz, forward
Samantha West (’93) stepped up big and delivered her first 2 goals of the season. The first assisted by
Donish Cole (’95) and the second assisted by
Brittany McDowell (’93). Sami West’s two goals were enough to give Schulz Academy a 2-1 win over West Pines.
