Matt Luzunaris impresses in Austria
2 Schulz Academy players could play against each other in 2009 in Europe. While the Austrian Newspapers report about the possibility of Jozy Altidore to move to Austria to play for Red Bull Salzburg in summer 2009 (see article below), another Schulz Academy player impressed the coaches in his first practices at Rapid Vienna, Austria’s most successful and popular Bundesliga Club.

Matt Luzunaris (Schulz Academy U-20) convinced the coaches of Rapid Vienna in his first training sessions so much, that they are considering to offer him a professional contract. After scoring 4 goals in an internal scrimmage with the Professionals of the most successful club in Austrian history, the Rapid Vienna coaching staff decided to take him to their 10 day pre-season camp to Turkey, where they also will play 4 games vs. other 1st division teams from other countries.
“Matt is definitely a player for us for the future. He is young, fast, great in the air, and can score goals. That’s exactly the player we are looking for”, stated Peter Pacult, Head Coach of Rapid Vienna.
Alfred Hoertnagl, Sports Manager of Rapid Vienna: ”Matt fits perfectly in our concept of developing young promising players for the future. Matt has the quality to even use Rapid Vienna for a bigger career in a few years. We will help him as much as we can to do that”.
“I worked with Matt for more than a month in our Academy here in Florida before he left to Vienna, and I could feel day by day that he got better. He scored many goals for us in the past, and he will score many goals in the future in Europe. I am very proud of him, that he impressed everybody already in the first few practices, and didn’t let the jet leg affect him. Not many players can do that“, says Dr. Josef Schulz, his former coach and founder of the Schulz Academy.
Matt Luzunaris: "I'm very happy with my performances and the whole situation. Although the pace in the practices and in the games is very fast, I will adapt to this soon. I'm excited to fly with the team on Wednesday to the pre-season camp in Turkey, where I hope I can score some goals for Rapid".
Matt Luzunaris played already his first official game on January 19th with his new club Rapid Vienna, a pre-season game vs. Zwettl, a third division club in Austria (see below a newspaper clip from Austria ).

Rapid-Zwettl 6:0 Rapid gewinnt Testspiel gegen Zwettl mit 6:0. Nach herrlichem Doppelpass mit Mario Bazina erzielte Steffen Hofmann bereits in der ersten Minute das 1:0. Kurz danach vergibt Neuzugang Stefan Maierhofer die Chance aufs 2:0. Die Grün-Weißen drehten immer mehr auf, und kamen in Folge zu zahlreichen gut herausgespielten Möglichkeiten. Der zweite Treffer war einer der Kategorie Traumtor. Nach Corner von Kapitän Steffen Hofmann in Minute 38 netzte Andreas Dober vom 16er volley ein. Kurz vor der Pause ist es unsere Nummer 11, die nach einem Foul an Branko Boskovic per Elfmeter am Torhüter der Zwettler scheitert. Halbzeitstand: 2-0.
Nach zahlreichen Auswechslungen blieben die Grün-Weißen auch nach der Pause am Drücker. Zwettl ohne jegliche Chance. Nach einer schönen Hereingabe von Veli Kavlak ist es erneut Maierhofer, der die Möglichkeit auf einen weiteren Treffer in der 55. Spielminute vergibt. Kurz darauf erhöht Boskovic mit einem "Doppelschlag" auf 4:0. Einmal nach einem Corner, und einmal per Elfmeter. Knapp vor Beginn der Rapidviertelstunde trifft Hofmann nach schönem Pass von Kavlak, 5:0. In Minute 79 ist es Fabiano, der mit einem schönen Schuss den Endstand von 6:0 fixiert. Der 18-jährige US-Stürmer Matt Luzunaris konnte sich gegen Ende des Spiels noch ein paar gute Möglichkeiten erarbeiten. Superstar aus New Yorker Stall zu Salzburg
Wien – In den USA ist er bereits jetzt ein Superstar, in Österreich könnte er es ab dem Sommer 2009 sein.
Die Rede ist vom erst 18-jährigen Josmer „Jozy“ Altidore. Der Angreifer steht derzeit bei Red Bull New York unter Vertrag.
Ab Sommer 2009 in Salzburg?
Die „Krone“ berichtet allerdings, dass im Vierjahres-Vertrag des Supertalents mit Eltern aus Haiti festgeschrieben ist, dass er im Sommer 2009 nach Salzburg wechselt. Im „Big Apple“ ist der Stürmer, der auch schon im A-Team der USA debütiert hat, bereits ein Superstar.
Schule statt Fußball
Spätestens seit dem 16. Dezember 2006, als er sich mit einem Weitschuss gegen Columbus im Alter von 16 Jahren zum jüngsten Torschützen aller Zeiten in der Major League Soccer machte. In seiner ersten Saison kam der Youngster noch spärlich zum Einsatz, vielmehr konzentrierte er sich auf seinen Schulabschluss in Florida.
Treffer gegen ÖFB-U20
Das hat sich im zweiten Spieljahr bei den Red Bulls geändert. 22 Spiele hat Altidore bestritten und dabei immerhin neun Treffer erzielt. Seine Torgefährlichkeit hat der US-Amerikaner auch schon gegen Österreich unter Beweis. Beim 2:1-Sieg der ÖFB-Kicker bei der U20-WM in Kanada sorgte der Goalgetter für das erste Tor. In New York wird schon seit geraumer Zeit gemunkelt, dass Altidore die New Yorker bald in Richtung Salzburg verlassen könnte.
Auch Real zeigt Interesse
Ob sich das Talent im Sommer 2009 dann aber tatsächlich für die „Bullen“ aus der Mozartstadt entscheidet, ist fraglich. Immerhin haben schon einige Top-Klubs aus Europa ein Auge auf Altidore geworfen. Darunter auch Real Madrid.
