Shawn Barry celebrates one of his 3 goals in the last 3 games in Austria

HARD WORK PAYS OFF

A year ago Shawn Barry tried out for LASK Linz in Austria and started as a substitute in the second team, the LASK Juniors, playing in the Austrian Regionalliga Mitte (3^rd division).  At the end of the season he was a starter in the first team with LASK in the Austrian Bundesliga. In addition he played with the LASK Juniors in the 3^rd league and his 3 goals at the end made the difference to become Champion in the Regionalliga Mitte.

How was the feeling when you had your debut as a starter in your first Bundesliga match?

Shawn Barry: “We had an away game in Tirol vs. Wacker Innsbruck and on the short trip in the bus from the hotel to the stadium I was pretty nervous. But when I entered the field for the warm up and I felt the crowd, although it was an away crowd of 12.000, I felt focused and good”.

What is the difference in the different levels you played so far?

Shawn Barry: “In college the game is relatively slow. Although I played with the National Champion in college the speed of play is completely different. On the professional level you have to think much earlier and quicker otherwise you immediately loose the ball”.

You not only played your first games in the Austrian Bundesliga, you also scored some deciding goals for the LASK Juniors, crowning them as champions in the Regionalliga Mitte.

Shawn Barry: “The new Head Coach of LASK, Walter Schachner, gave me more freedom, and also played me in a more offensive role, and this put me in better positions. My speed definitely also helps when I am in 1 vs. 1 situations. I am really happy with my situation right now”.

What is your next step?

Shawn Barry: “I will sit down with Josef (Schulz), my manager, and look into the different options. I like it in Linz and Austria is a beautiful country with very nice people, and if the offer is right, I would like to stay in Linz for at least another year, especially after the fact that I would be part of the first team from the beginning”.

LASK Juniors sind MEISTER!

Die LASK Juniors überrollten in der letzten Runde Allerheiligen mit 4:0 und sicherten sich als Aufsteiger die Meisterschaft in der Regionalliga Mitte. Der scheidende Trainer Thomas Weissenböck verabschiedet sich damit als Meistermacher.

Die Juniors legten stürmisch los und wollten sich unter keinen Umständen auf fremde Schützenhilfe verlassen. Hieran taten sie auch ganz gut, denn BW Linz erledigte seine Aufgabe mit einem 6:0 daheim gegen den DSV Leoben souverän und spielt nun in der Relegation um den Aufstieg.

Die erste Chance der Partie hatte Dominik Stadlbauer nach nur wenigen Minuten, scheiterte aber noch knapp. Doch die Führung der Juniors ließ dennoch lange auf sich warten: Kelmendi köpfte in der 14. Spielminute zum 1:0 ein!

Hierauf wollten sich die Juniors jedoch nicht ausruhen und legten nach. Und schon in der 20. Minute stand es bereits 2:0 für die Gäste: Shawn Barry köpfte nach einer wunderschönen Flanke von Aussen ein. Auch den Rest des ersten Spielabschnittes bestimten die Juniors.

Nach der Pause allerdings kamen die Hausherren sichtlich gestärkt aus der Kabine und begannen einen Sturmlauf auf das Tor der Mannen von Thomas Weissenböck. Doch Lorenz Höbarth bewahrte sein Team ein ums andere Male vor dem Anschlusstreffer.

Die Juniors besannen sich in dieser Zeit auf das Kontern, ohne jedoch die Führung erfolgreich weiter auszubauen. Dies gelang dann aber in der 68. Minute mit freundlicher Unterstützung des Allerheiligen Tormanns Mirseloski. Dieser wollte einen Ball abwerfen, rutschte dabei allerdings aus, weshalb das runde Leder vor den Füßen des Juniors-Kapitäns landete. Kelmendi musste den Ball nur noch ins Leere Tor zum 3:0 einschieben. Die Entscheidung!

In der Schlußphase gelang dem jungen Piersinger sogar noch das 4:0 (84.).
