This was a very successful weekend for our younger age groups here in Miami. All 3 participating teams reached the final. The U13 won in a dramatic penalty shoot out. U13 Coach Vinny DiBullo: "The players had an awesome weekend. After loosing a final a few weeks ago in another tournament, they showed their cool executing their penalties like professionals this time. It was an emotional win, and the players deserved it".

 AZ Alkmaar stunned Ajax Amsterdam, 3-0, in Wednesday’s Dutch Cup semifinal behind two goals from U.S. national team forward Jozy Altidore, who tied Clint Dempsey’s single-season scoring record for an American playing abroad.The triumph at the Amsterdam Arena sent AZ to the May 9 final against PSV Eindhoven. A victory there would clinch AZ’s first Cup title since 1982 and qualify it for the 2013-14 UEFA Europa League. A berth in Europe’s secondary competition might come even with a loss, depending on how first-place PSV finishes its Eredivisie campaign.

After strong and consistent performances in the early (6-1-1) and regular season (9-1-2) in the South Florida United League, the U15 Schulz Academy Team reached the play-offs this weekend, where they faced in the semifinals a team they never have beaten before. In their last 3 games against Miami Lakes in different competitions, the team lost 3 times against this physically strong team from Miami.

But a great first half with a 2-0 lead was enough to beat their opponent 2-1 to move on to the finals, where they faced a strong Weston team. Weakened by 2 injuries from the day before the team especially in the second half played well but lost 1-3.

“Overall the players and the team progressed a lot in the last 6 months. Although physically one of the smaller teams, the players know how to move the ball. They played very consistent on an already high level for this age. In addition we get a lot of interest from players outside our club to join the team for the next season, and I am very confident, that the team and the players will make the next step to one of the best teams in the country”, says Josef Schulz, who was coaching the team this season.

“Despite the jet leg I felt good and I think I impressed the coaches and team mates with a solid performance in my first game. Before I scored the goal, I made a sprint into open space and got the ball in the right moment to beat the offside. The goalkeeper read the pass, but I was a bit faster and chipped the ball over him. At this point we were 0-2 behind, and my goal gave the team a boost. 10 minutes after the goal I used my speed and outran 3 players, before I passed it to the middle, were one of our players tapped it into the open goal”, describes Jamel Johnson his debut game.

“I am happy for Jamel. If he is in good shape he is a very dangerous player. His speed can make the difference. This is exactly the type of player his team needs to stay in the division. Their players are technically very good, but need a type like Jamel to complete their offense”, says Dr. Josef Schulz about the player he trained at his academy in the youth system and this year in the U23 and PDL Schulz Academy team.

“My new team mates and all the coaching staff are very friendly and help me to feel comfortable in my new environment. In general to feel comfortable in Vienna is not very difficult. It is a beautiful town. The last 2 years it was voted by CNN as the city with the highest living standard worldwide” continues Jamel Johnson, who will put all his effort to keep his team in the Wr. Stadtliga. He is joining in Vienna 3 other Schulz Academy players, who are playing at city rival Wr. Viktoria, which is playing for the title this year, being in second place just 2 points behind the leader.

Kevin Bangai, who prepared himself at the Schulz Academy for over a year, signed a contract with Wr. Viktoria, which is hoping his goals will secure them the title in the Wr. Stadt Liga in Austria.

 “After showing consistency in our academy trainings in the last weeks we sent both players to Bolton Wanderers. It is a great opportunity for them and I am sure they will make a good impression there. Jonny and Alan played already a serious role in our last year’s PDL team as 17 year olds and showed that they can compete as young players on a certain level. We have already received positive feedback from the Bolton coaching staff and they invited them for an additional week. Especially the extraordinary speed of both of them impressed their coaches”, says Schulz Academy Director, Dr. Josef Schulz.

“We had already good opportunities in other countries in Europe, but this is a very good chance for both to be seen on a very high level”, continues Dr. Schulz.

“We came well prepared to England. It’s fast and direct, but this is what coach Josef teached us throughout the year here in the academy in Florida. The weather is a little different than in sunny Florida, but we adapted very quickly and are already looking forward to next week to show the coaches what we are all about” state Jonny Barron and Alan Carvalho.

After impressing the coaching staff of Sporting Kansas City at a morning practice with the Schulz Academy, “Junior”, who came from Cameroon to practice with the Schulz Academy for 3 months, flew to Kansas City to practice with the club to get a contract.

“While Sporting Kansas City was at the MLS combine, which each year takes place at the stadium and fields we are using year round for our Academy trainings, they saw him in one of our morning practices and obviously he impressed them. He is an interesting player (6’6”). For a team, which needs a target player, he is the right player. I wish him all the best to continue to impress the coaches there”, says Dr. Schulz, founder of the Schulz Academy.

MISSION

The “Dr. Schulz Soccer Management Institute” is providing to their students high quality, reality related education in sports management, tailored to soccer. This knowledge will ensure these students in the future to work in the market they have passion for – SOCCER.

The institute and its curriculum was created for current High School students, High School graduates and college students who want to work in soccer clubs on a high level as coaches or club managers.

This education also serves as first step for players who made it already as professional soccer players to continue after their professional carrier to stay in this profession.

“There is a huge market out there in soccer for quality coaches, club managers or administrators. In general former players with no specific education in soccer management get the job as sport director or club manager after their active professional career as a player ended because the just are familiar with the club and its surrounding. I remember after I finished my doctoral degree in Soccer Management at the university in Vienna on a Friday. One day after on Saturday I played my last game as a pro and the following Monday I was the Head Coach and GM of the club. The same vision we have for our Schulz Academy players who become pros in different clubs in Europe after their active career. In addition we will promote graduates of our Soccer Management Institute in order to get attractive jobs in the US in the immensely growing market of soccer” explains Dr. Josef Schulz about the new program.

Puerto Rico never made it out of a qualifier in any FIFA soccer event before. The chances to do it this time were very slim, after the U20 team of Puerto Rico lost their first game in the group against Trinidad & Tobago. Even the 1-0 win vs. Curacao in the second game would have made no difference if Trinidad & Tobago would have won their last game vs. Curacao, but they lost their game 1-0. Puerto Rico advanced with the goal of Jose Abrams for the first time in the country’s history in a men’s FIFA competition to the final round of a World Cup qualifying tournament, where they will face 11 other nations of the CONCACAF U20 championships to qualify for the U20 World Cup in Turkey.

“Jose was already playing very well in the matches of our U23 Academy Team in the last few weeks. So on the one side for me it was not a big surprise that he played well at the qualifiers, but on the other hand to be the main guy in a big event like this, is not that easy. He was working very hard on his comeback here at the academy after he suffered a muscle injury. I think our staff did a good job to prepare him for the tournament and we will continue to do so for the Final 12 competition in the beginning of 2013”, describes Dr. Josef Schulz the performance of his student.

Puerto Ricans create history at CFU tourney

Puerto Rico’s Under-20 football team created history yesterday, as for the first time in the country’s history a men’s football team has made it to the final round of a World Cup qualifying tournament.

A hard-fought 1-1 draw with Haiti in their Group A Caribbean Football Union Final at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium saw them progress to the 12-team Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Under-20 championships.

"It is the first time in history that a men’s team will go to the second round in this tournament, and also the first time that we go to the final round in any competition in the history of football in Puerto Rico," Puerto Rico’s coach, Jeaustin Campos, said.

Puerto Rico went ahead in the 38th minute through a Jose Abrams goal before Haiti struck back in the 85th minute through Johnley Cherry.

In the opening game of the double-header Curaçao notched their first win of the tournament, as they clipped Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 to leave themselves with a chance of progressing as the best third place team. The game’s lone goal was brilliantly scored by Alberto Geryon in the 10th minute.

Haiti have also progressed to the final stage of qualifying for the 2013 Youth World Cup, as they finished atop the group with seven points. Puerto Rico placed second with four points ahead of Curaçao (three) and Trinidad and Tobago (three).

Puerto Rico’s passage was aided by a huge stroke of fortune, however, as their go-ahead goal was due to a mistake by Guyanese referee Sherwin Johnson. Johnson blew his whistle while a ball played into Haiti’s area from the right flank was in flight, several of the Haitian players stopped playing, but Puerto Rico’s Jose Abrams seized the opportunity to head the ball into the back of the net and the goal was allowed to stand.

Haiti would make the final few minutes of the game tense for the Puerto Ricans, as they pulled level in the 85th minute when substitute Chery headed in a left-sided corner by fellow substitute Renald Metellus.

"It was a lucky play, but they also scored, so the final six minutes were very tense," Campos said.

“When I realized that the referee didn’t block the ball and the ball was free I looked up and saw the goalkeeper outside the box. I ran to the ball and kicked it as hard as I could, because the ball was way behind the middle still in our half. When the ball left my foot I knew it will go in”, describes “Zizu” Tsiskaridze his unusual goal he scored last week in Sweden for his club Joenkoeping Soedra IF.  

“This goal brought “Zizu” into the international headlines and some clubs showed already interest to sign him in the next transfer window after solid performances in the Swedish League. “Zizu” is a very interesting player and can play in different positions in defense and offense. After his contract in Sweden expires we will try everything to move him to an English, German or Austrian club in the winter transfer window”, says Dr. Josef Schulz, who represents “Zizu” and 60 other players in Europe together with his partner in Europe.

Wr. Viktoria, the club of former Schulz Academy players Darryl Gordon and Nigel Blair, was the only 4^th division club left in the Austrian Cup. Last year still in the 5^th division, they earned the right as the only team of the fifth division to participate in the Open Austrian Cup competition by winning the Vienna Cup (where only 4th division teams and below are allowed to participate). Leading in half time 2-0 (Darryl Gordon scored the second goal), the Bundesliga club SV Kapfenberg came back and equalized the lead in the second half. Nigel Blair, who plays right inside defense, got injured when the team was leading 2-0 and had to leave the field. After that the defense looked a little shaky and got the 2 goals which led to overtime. After leading again 3-2, SV Kapfenberg scored the tying goal and penalty kicks had to decide. Wr. Viktoria had the better nerves and won 4-1.

In the round of 16 Wr. Viktoria is playing now another Bundesliga Club, SV Ried, at home, hoping to extend their sensational run in the Austrian Cup.

“We were the big underdog, but we felt quite comfortable before the match. They made a lot of pressure but we always scored at the right time. After my goal for the 2-0 lead we had the game under control, but after Nigel had to leave the field with an injury the game became very tight again. It was a thriller till the end. I am very happy here at the club and although only in the 4^th division the level of play is very high and the club is very professional”, says Darryl Gordon.

“I felt bad to leave the field with the injury leading 2-0 but the team pulled it off and we are all very happy to make it as the only 4^th division team to the round of 16 in the Austrian Cup”, continues Nigel Blair, one of the top defenders in the league.    

Wr. Viktoria won the 5^th division in Austria last year and established themselves in the top 3 this year in the 4^th gear with chances to move to the 3^rd division after this season. Coach of the team is Toni Poster, the record scorer of the Austrian National team with 44 goals in 95 National Team games. He also scored 79 goals for 1. FC Koeln in 150 games in the German Bundesliga and 55 goals in 102 games with FC Sevilla in La Liga from 1988 – 1991.
